Stop Illegal Fishing work together with the FAO on specific assignments as well as through their support to countries to share an African Voice in FAO processes such as the Committee on Fisheries.
In recognition of the work that Stop Illegal Fishing undertakes, they were awarded the biennial (2014-2015) Margarita Lizárraga Medal by the FAO, the award recognizes those who have served with distinction in the application of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries.
The FAO is an intergovernmental organization of the United Nations with 194 Member Nations, two associate members and one member organization, the European Union. The FAO plays a leading role in international fisheries policy, including through the Committee on Fisheries (COFI). To achieve its mandate the FAO works with a wide range of partners, including Governments, Regional Fisheries Bodies, cooperatives, fishing communities and groups like Stop Illegal Fishing.
Stop Illegal Fishing works closely with the FAO on capacity building in Africa, as a service provider on assignments related to the Port State Measures Agreement and Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction as well as through providing African evidence into the FAO policy elaboration processes and supporting African participation in processes and meetings in line with Stop Illegal Fishing’s areas of interest and expertise.
