Global fisheries enforcement guide published by INTERPOL
INTERPOL has published a new guide, ‘International Law Enforcement Cooperation in the Fisheries Sector: A Guide for Law Enforcement Practitioners’. The guide frames the experience of five years work on fisheries related crime by INTERPOL and its member countries. It is based on the reality of the enhanced law enforcement results achieved by working together using INTERPOL’s capabilities alongside those of inter-governmental organizations, regional organisations and civil society; and by connecting national enforcement agencies, often on opposite sides of the world.
INTERPOL Global Fisheries Enforcement was first established as Project Scale in 2013 and is dedicated to enabling INTERPOL member countries identify, deter and disrupt transnational crimes associated with or related to the fisheries sector. The Global Fisheries Enforcement team works to ensure that the proceeds of commercial fishing are not the result of criminal, illicit or unlawful transnational business models and networks, especially where global cooperation between developed and developing countries can be facilitated.
The Guide is especially intended to aid fisheries enforcement and other agency officers, such as customs officers and vessel registrars, who may not be aware of the types of assistance available to them from other countries and regional and international organizations, or how to secure such help
This guide is a comprehensive resource intended to enhance and develop the capacity, capability and cooperation of member countries to effectively tackle illegal fishing and crimes associated to the fisheries sector.
