Fifth Global Fisheries Enforcement Training Workshop (GFETW)
The Global Fisheries Enforcement Training Workshop (GFETW), a global conference convened by the International Monitoring, Control and Surveillance (MCS) Network every two years will be hosted by New Zealand in Auckland March 7-11, 2016.
The GFETW is designed specifically for fisheries officers and those
responsible for enforcing laws designed to protect legal fisheries and
fishers.‚ There are also opportunities for participation by other experts
in the field of combatting IUU fishing, such as investigators, attorneys,
foreign service officers, forensics specialists.
‚
The overarching theme of the 5th GFETW is regional and global
collective efforts to‚ combat‚ IUU fishing using effective MCS management
tools, including enforcement powers to protect the sustainability and cultural
and economic viability of all fish stocks.
‚
Key objectives will include:
- to develop a high-level MCS IUU Risk Framework which displays the national and regional frameworks currently in place and identifies gaps, overlaps, risks and opportunities;
- to showcase and discuss international efforts to‚ combat‚ illegal fishing, including partnerships between national agencies, regional authorities and NGOs; and
- to present and showcase efforts to combat IUU from indigenous, artisanal and archipelago perspectives.
Concurrently, the Network is running the 2nd Stop IUU Fishing Award contest, information about which is available on the Network website here and on the GFETW website here, where translations in Spanish and French are also posted.
